38min PODCAST: Christopher Kennedy Lawford UN Goodwill Ambassador on addicts, disease & recovery

Via Scoop.itDrugs, Society and Human Rights

Great interview  – interesting and one that raises lots of issues:   1. What are the implications of referring to people as ‘addicts’ or ‘alcoholics’?   2. Christopher Kennedy Lawford argues addiction is a disease – is disease an accurate and appropriate way of understanding drugs?   3. Are the stories of famous priveleged  ‘individuals’ able to help us to understand the disadvantage lives of people with drug problems who fill the Courts, Corrections and Prisons?   4. Are we really unable to proclaim the War on Drugs a failure until we’ve compared it with something else?   5. Given the progress and success of progressive regimes such as Switzerland, Holland and Portugal why would NZ look to the USA who have a draconian and damaging drug policy?   6. Does regular drug use inevitably lead to enslavement, destruction and death for most ‘addicts’?     For more on a disease model of addiction see Prof Tom McLellan http://www.drugfoundation.org.nz/through-the-maze/videos
