here are some issues with drug courts:

– up tariffs offenders closer to prison
– net widen and draws in more offenders into court system
– abstinence only, intolerant of harm reduction
– very costly, almost as much as prison
– assumes drug – crime causal relationship
– human rights issues of compulsory treatment
– high breach rate
– consumes vast resources that could be spend on treatment
– no full range of treatment options
– non-problematic drug users get sucked into drug courts
– success claims overlook all those who commence drug court and end up breached and in prison
– alternatives to prison, are more often punitive alternatives to other community sentences already available
